Y6 - Carrie's War

In Year 6 we have been developing our understanding of what life was like for children during World War II by reading and watching 'Carrie's War' by Nina Bawden.  This week we have been looking at the different settings in the story and describing them through the eyes of the main characters, Carrie and Nick.

Carrie's War - the book currently being read by the Y6 children.

Y5 - Ancient Greece

Year 5 have been learning about the ancient Greeks. In Literacy, we read 'The Tale of Troy.  We learnt how the Greek army battled with the Trojans for nine long years, when Queen Helen of Greece left to be with Prince Paris of Troy.

Eventually a clever Greek soldier, called Odyssesus, came up with a cunning plan... he wanted to build a wooden horse to trick the Trojans.  The plan succeeded and the Greeks conquered the Trojans with the famous Trojan Horse, returning Queen Helen to Greece once and for all.

We used the myth as a stimulus for our own newspaper reports.  Over a number of days, we learnt how to write headlines, introductions, the newspaper body, quotes and conclusions.

In Topic, we used our iPods to research Greek soldiers.  We used the information we collected to write information texts about the equipment Greek soldiers needed to protect themselves in battle.

We enjoyed editing our own work and reading other people's work.

Year 4 - The Romans

Year 4 have been learning about the Romans. In Literacy this week, we have been writing persuasive letters to the Roman Emperor to try and get him to stop gladiator fights. We wrote these letters as if we were the son or daughter of a gladiator. We had to use different persuasive techniques in our letters such as questions, powerful adjectives and flattery.

In DT, we have been designing and making Roman chariots. Before we made them, we had to write step by step instructions in our art books. We included imperative verbs and time connectives.
