FS1 - Ourselves

This week was 'Diversity Week' at Normanby Primary School.  Each year group has been learning about life in different countries throughout the world.

In FS1 this week, we have been learning about ourselves.  We learnt about some of the games the children like to play.  Here is some of the work the children have produced.

Year 5 - Ancient Greek Vases

In Y5 this week, we have been learning about the pottery made and used by ancient potters in Greece.  The children found out that the word 'vase' had evolved and changed over time. The children expected Greek vases to hold flowers but were surprised to find that they were used as storage and drinking vessels.

These are some of the different shapes produced by the Greek potters.

The children found out that Greek potters created black or red-figure pottery.  Familiar stories or scenes were painted on to the vases.

In Literacy, we read some Greek fables.  These included 'Hercules and the Wagonner' and 'The Hare and the Tortoise'.  The children chose a fable to story map in their books in preparation for designing their own vase.

The children then designed and sketched their own Greek vase based on the fable of their choice.

Using air drying clay, we then started sculpting our designs.  We used some special clay tools to help us.  As you can see, we are now in the process of giving our vases the base coat.  Watch this space and we will post some of the finished vases!
