Year 3 Diary Recounts

Year 3 have been writing diary recounts as Howard Carter in their topic of Ancient Egypt.  Here are some examples.

20th November 1922
Today I was as brave as a warrior. I was brave because I travelled to my destination. My destination was the Valley of the Kings. I was going to look for an undiscovered shiny tomb. I was walking loudly and a little bit later I heard a bang below me. I dug to see what it was all about. I saw a solid step. I dug deeper to see if it would lead me and my crew to somewhere really interesting. By sunset, we had dug out twelve steps and it led me and my crew to a strange and old place. The steps led us to a passage. The passage was spooky and dark as space. The eerie silence was spooky.

28th November 1922
Over the last few days, I led the team down a broken pottery path and I walked next to a doorway. I drilled a hole in the upper left corner of the door. I put a candle light through and saw bronze thrones and golden chariots. I was amazed by the golden chariots. I broke down the door. I was in another doorway. I was speechless to all the team. What will I find today? Treasure? Or will the tomb be robbed?

28th November 1922
Eventually, we came to a dead end. My hands were shaking. Sweat bounced off my forehead like giant snowballs.  Silence! All that could be heard was breathing! My heart was almost thumping out of my chest. Dark silhouettes gleamed in front of the orange glow of the candlelight. Fears twisted through my head like a tornado. I did not want to fail again. Anxiously, my trembling hands made a tiny hole in the upper left hand corner of the doorway.  Hot air brushed past our skin. The candle flickered. Is this a spirit of a great Pharaoh? All I could see was darkness and space. Mist swayed past our skin like fog on an Autumn morning. Peering through once again, I was amazed at what I saw. We saw strange animals and statues… Everywhere the glint of gold. A hurricane of whispers seemed to murmur, “Curse upon you” “Turn back or die” “Beware, leave now”. Quietly, Lord Carnarvon asked, “Can you see anything?”  It was all I could do to force the words out. “Yes, wonderful things,” I whispered huskily. Silently, my team broke down the door. We entered the chamber. Inside were bronze thrones, golden chariots and glistening coffins.
